Knee pain has been a common complaint in the clinics, especially from those that are exposed to frequent and intense running. The iliotibial band syndrome, often referred to as the “Runner’s Knee,” is a common injury among runners and other long distance athletes who requires frequent knee flexion and extension. It is caused by the inflammation of the lower portion of the iliotibial band resulting in lateral knee pain.

 How to treat bands

Anatomy of the Iliotibial (IT) Band

The iliotibial band (IT) is a thick band of connective tissues in the lateral side of the thigh, which arises from the fascia in the gluteal muscles. Some authors consider it as a reinforcement of the fascia lata itself.

In the knee, it is responsible for maintaining stability on the outer side of the joint both in extension and in partial flexion, and is therefore used constantly during walking and running. It is one of the main supports of the knee against gravity. A bursa at the top of the knee assists in the smooth movement of the IT band over the lateral femoral condyle during flexion or extension.

The Iliotibial Band Syndrome…

The constant motion of running, cycling or walking long distances results from excessive friction between the bursa and iliotibial band as it passes over the bony prominence on the outer side of the knee. This causes excessive irritation and inflammation. With prolonged irritation, the band tends to tighten more due to repeated rubbing, which causes pain along the outside of the knee joint. If the symptoms are not treated, the knee can become swollen and more painful and in extreme cases, scarring of the bursa is expected, which further increases the pain and restricts range of motion.

Symptoms of ITB Syndrome

  • Sharp or burning pain along the outer side of the knee at the joint line over the bony prominence, radiating either proximally or distally
  • Pain usually develops gradually over time, becoming progressively worse.
  • Pain is made worse by running, particularly downhill
  • Inflammation and swelling on the lateral side of the knee
  • Tenderness over and around the bony prominence
  • Popping sensation on the lateral aspect of the knee with movement

Treatment of IT Band Syndrome

  • Inflammatory stage, (RICE) – rest, ice, compression and elevation are the first approach to treatment
  • Physical therapy which includes modalities, stretching and strengthening exercises for further rehabilitation
  • Activity modification by avoiding aggravating factors

Treatment with Massage

Sports massage is very beneficial in loosening the iliotibial band. While treatments should be aimed mostly in the ITB itself, the surrounding muscles, especially the tensor fascia lata and gluteals, may also be tight. Massaging these sites is recommended to release the tension at the source.

Aside from myofascial release and sports massage technique, vibration therapy has also been recognized for successful treatments against ITB syndrome. Vibration massage can be performed by shaking the lateral side of the thigh, using light to firm pressure. The effect can be much more vigorous if an electronic device designed specifically for the purpose is utilized.

Recovapro massage guns are highly recommended because it provides the same experience as a manual massage can provide, and with a variety of innovative features it has, each user will be amazed!

MASSAGE GUNS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL

Recovapro introduces theSmart Glide Technology andSmart Touch Technology, the firsts in the industry. These innovative elementsmake Recovapro’s massage guns different.

Smart Glide Technology makes Recovapro not just the quietest massage device but also the safest. Its brushless motor design is equipped with the state-of-the-art sound insulation feature reducing operational and mechanical noise, without compromising the quality of relief it could offer. Each device automatically turns off when operating time exceeds 10 minutes, limiting the vibration exposure to the safest length of treatment.

Also, it is the only percussion device to utilizeSmart Touch Technology allowing the device to be switched off at any level of treatment anytime.

RECOVAPRO MASSAGE GUN IS A PERFECT COMBINATION OF SAFETY, COMFORT AND DURABILITY WITHOUTCOMPROMISINGQUALITY AND EFFECTIVITY

Every element in a Recovapro massage gun is an investment worth every penny. It’s innovative, aluminum-composite encased brushless motor is scientifically calibrated to precisely deliver 12 mm of amplitude at a top speed of 55 percussions per second on the body, and is capable of running for 20,000 hours. It provides more than 180 minutes of battery life, with over 3 hours of operating time. That’s more than double of most of the competition. With built-in cooling component and a stall force of 60 lbs., it can withstand every condition, including excessive heat and pressure. It offers safety for both the patient and the caregiver. Additionally, each unit is ergonomically designed for comfort and safety.

Now, back to ITB...

The iliotibial band, gluteals and tensor fascia lata are very large area, and Recovapro massage gun can be adjusted to a setting specific for the desired effect on each area, and the attachments specifically are the round head to cover the large area of the thigh and the bullet head for trigger pointing techniques.

Iliotibial band syndrome is most common in athletes who participate in long-distance running with 4.3-7.5% occurrence rate and increased in adolescents undergoing the rapid growth phase (Wier, 2006). A sports facility clinic accommodates a number of ITBS cases per day with each treatment lasting 10 to 15 minutes per client, the frequency recommended for elite athletes and runners. Handling such a huge load, Recovapro massage guns won’t explode like dynamite because it’s made of aluminum composite casing with a stale force of 60 lbs and a cooling vent to keep it from heating up.

Runners can have their ITBS treated even when out in the field because Recovapro massage guns are portable and provide more than 3 hours of battery life, almost double than that of the rest out there. They can literally do it anytime and anywhere, without disturbing a neighboring pack of prayer warriors because it boasts itself as the quietest massage gun in the market.

The Smart Glide Technology and Smart Touch Technology make the Recovapro massage gun not only the most durable, but also the quietest and safest massage gun ever. So, don’t run from the gun!

Massage Procedures Using Recovapro Massage Gun for ITBS

  • Along the tensor fascia latae extending to the gluteals on the lateral thigh, apply short gliding strokes, friction and static compression using the round head attachment, adjust speed and power accordingly
  • Along the ITB, apply gliding strokes also with the round head attachment
  • For a shortened iliotibial band, apply a myofascial release technique and trigger pointing using the bullet head attachment
  • To release a hypertonic, shortened iliotibial band, use the round head attachment with a slow speed then shift to a moderate

Note:Start and end slow using the round head attachment at a least speed and power setting.

Benefits of Percussive Massage for IT Band Syndrome

  • Relieves tension in the IT band to release friction at the knee
  • Stimulates blood flow for fast recovery
